Our Lady’s message in Medjugorje: “Dear children! Today I wish to call you to pray, day by day, for the souls in Purgatory. Every soul needs prayer and grace in order to come to God and to God’s love. In this way, you too, dear children, receive new intercessors who will help you in life to understand that earthly things are not important for you, and that Heaven alone is what you should strive for. Therefore, dear children, pray without ceasing so that you may be able to help yourselves, and also others, to whom your prayers will bring joy. What did the visionaries say about Purgatory, according to what the Blessed Virgin told them and showed them?
According to the words of the Medjugorje visionaries, Heaven is a vast place of great light, beauty, and immeasurable joy. There are meadows, mountains, hills, and beautiful landscapes; people possess an inner light, and their presence radiates peaceful joy. Purgatory is a very sad and cold place. The visionaries describe it as a misty area with gray fog, through which trembling, crying, and moaning could be heard, and where sadness and loneliness fill the space.
Hell is even more disturbing. The visionaries described it as a vast place with many people and a great lake of fire in the center. According to the visionaries, the people in Hell are angry, cursed, ugly, and consumed by endless rage. They enter the tormenting fires naked and come out terrifying, no longer in human form, with darkened, blackened skin like beasts.
The Virgin Mary, through Medjugorje and the visionaries, wants to show people not only Heaven, but also Hell and Purgatory. Mary says that it is important for us to understand that Heaven and Hell are real. She says: “Through the message she gave us, she told us that our life must be like a flower and that we are here only passing through. Only eternal life does not pass away. For this reason, she encourages us and asks us to think more about the spiritual life and Heaven. She wants us to think about Hell and Purgatory. She said that our life will be very different, and so will our attitude toward life, when we remember that there is life after this one.”
That is why Our Lady encourages us to live this short life in joy, so that we may understand, as the Bible says, that we are truly on a journey and only passing through. For this reason, Our Lady showed the visionaries Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory: to show us that all these places are real and that our souls go there after death.
