Testimony of an exorcist: Through my own experience, I came to realize that curses are real

Curses are real! Here is how an exorcist came to realize this at the beginning of his ministry. Msgr. Stephen Rossetti, an American exorcist and one of the leaders of the St. Michael Center for Spiritual Renewal — a Catholic organization dedicated to the ministry of healing and deliverance — described on his blog how he came to understand that curses are real.

Like many Americans, when I first began this ministry many years ago, I did not think much about curses. They seemed to me like relics of pagan superstition. But Fr. Gabriel Amorth, the former exorcist of Rome, said that 90 percent of the cases of possession he dealt with were the result of a curse. Hmmmm… Then, a few years ago, I was traveling by train to the outskirts of Rome on my way to Tre Fontane, the Trappist abbey and the place where St. Paul was beheaded. Across the street is also the site of Our Lady of Revelation, a Marian apparition from 1947. So it was a beautiful one-day pilgrimage in Rome.

While I was on the train, a young man approached me, looking rather disturbed, and asked for money. I responded by offering him cookies — I usually respond to such requests by giving food. He became angry and stared at me for an uncomfortably long time, then walked away. At first, I did not think much of it, but within a few seconds I felt a spiritual attack. It was like a storm wind that created chaos in my head. “Wow,” I thought, “what is this?” It was unusual, sudden, strong, and relentless. Then an inspired thought came to me: “The man cursed you.”

So I placed both of my priestly hands on my head and prayed a prayer of deliverance. Within a few seconds it stopped, and things returned to normal. God has ways of teaching exorcists about their ministry. Curses are real, not because this man had any power of his own. People who curse draw their strength from Satan, consciously or unconsciously. Sadly, that man was carrying out Satan’s command.

The Scriptures are very clear: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them” (Rom 12:14). Never curse another person. Cursing others is the work of Satan. On the contrary, I pray for this man. May he come to know the joy and peace of salvation in Christ.
